We are seeking an Assistant Tax Officer to be part of a team of Assistant Tax Officers responsible for delivering a front line service to the general public, assessing tax returns, and administering the IncomeTax Instalment System (ITIS).


– As part of a team, ensure the delivery of a consistently high standard of customer service during extensive and wide ranging contact with customers.
– Assist the general public with front line queries, which are often of a technical nature, as part of the Taxes Office helpdesk.
– Resolve incoming queries from individuals, employers and tax accountants, in a professional, clear and concise manner, giving appropriate, timely and accurate advice at all times.
– Carry out the administration and assessment of less complex personal tax cases.
– Manage all incoming enquiries whether it be by telephone, letter, email or interview.
– Communicate and consult with taxpayers and agents giving competent and technical advice.
– Support the administration and delivery of the ITIS system.
– Administer the ITIS good compliance scheme.
– Undertake a role in the administration of the annual reporting of benefits in kind remuneration by all employers.
– Review and record paper based submissions ensuring all statutory obligations are met.
– Handle general enquiries relating to benefits in kind law, its procedures and legal reporting requirements.


– 'A' level or above standard of education and a minimum of five GCSEs (or equivalent) with a minimum grade of C in English and Maths being essential.
– Some knowledge and understanding of Jersey Tax Law.
– Excellent oral and written communication skills.
– High levels of organisation and efficiency with capability to work effectively under pressure.
– Ability to work with minimum supervision.
– Ability to make judgemental decisions where required within the powers of the Income Tax Law and concessions together with the Long-Term Care Laws and know when to seek senior officer advice.
– The postholder should have undertaken, or be willing to undertake lean “yellow belt” training.
– Strong computer literacy is essential, especially in Microsoft Office Products – Outlook, Word and Excel
– Ability to master the bespoke packages of the Income Tax management system.
– Undertake, understand and uphold the Oath of Secrecy and the Official Secrets Act, underpinning the highly sensitive nature of the role.

Note: A full training scheme is in place for new recruits, run over several weeks, covering the whole scope of the Income Tax Laws, the Taxes Office procedures and practice and its bespoke IT system.
